Discussion:
Walt, G3NYY, SK

Those of us who are RSGB members may have spotted that Walt, G3NYY, is
listed in the June RadCom Silent Key column. He died in February.

I'm sure that many will remember Walt, who used to be a regular
contributor to this newsgroup. However, he was often pretty forthright
about things, and eventually got fed up with the 'goings on'. IIRC,
after a long discussion about the amazingly strong signals emanating
from certain FL stations, he signed out for good, exclaiming "Ten watts
my arse!" - and he never returned.

I think I actually only worked Walt on a couple of occasions - the first
being a rather faltering CW QSO, soon after I got my licence. At the
time I was still in my native Northumberland, and he was a GM in
Lockerbie (actually about 20 miles south of me!).

Some of Walt's many amateur activities can be seen on the QRZ.com
website. In particular, he was a leading light in the Radio Amateur Old
Timers' Association (RAOTA), and could often be heard running their
regular G2OT nets. Hopefully it will be a long time before his callsign
gets re-issued - and when it does, whoever gets it will treat it with
the respect it deserves!

I wondered what had happened to him as I hadn't heard him on the air for
some time. When I was first using CW, he gave me lots of encouragement
which helped me keep on practising.

It will be 5 years before the call is generally made available AFAIK.

I think I first worked him as GW3NYY/P on 2m somewhere around
Abergavenny, then I recall him being involved with some of the "Square
bashers" DXpeditions.

Here's a random thread of him on this ng.

I hadn't made it that far into the magazine to see it, but I am sad
nonetheless. I hope that his recent years were not a burden.

I did suggest to Ofcom that the reissue cooling-off period should be 50
years, but I suspect that no one intends to hang around that wretched
organisation for longer than they have to, the John Lewis's of the
world beckon.

Walt's callsign is probably a little too pedestrian to be sought out,
unlike some of those that were issued before the new licence conditions
came in which appear to limit the grave robbers' ability to masquerade
as what they are not.

I did once meet Walt at GB2SM and also at the megavolt rig in the
Science Museum, but he didn't appear to have discovered skateboards at
that point.

I dunno, there was something odd. Saw him there again, a few years
later, and he was slagging off his neighbours who were complaining
about RFI - that time I just thought that he was an arsehole.

Those of us who are RSGB members may have spotted that Walt, G3NYY,
is listed in the June RadCom Silent Key column. He died in February.
I'm very sad to hear this, and equally so of the SK amateurs that
